"STUMPTOWN STRAYS" Give Guide 2025

 GIVE GUIDE 2025

Give Guide Stumptown Strays

Some of the saddest cases we take in deal with neglect. We look at our own pups, joyfully enjoying the sniffs of crisp fall hike or digging in their favorite blanket to make sure it’s arranged just so for the perfect snooze and our hearts break for the dogs we meet here at Stumptown Strays that aren’t living that type of life.

Like GG. This 12 year old Lhasa came to us in terrible shape, very obviously neglected for years. She was found dumped in Portland, bald and covered in sores. GG also had horrific eye, ear, and skin infections. She was in a lot of pain and needed help.

In our exam, we diagnosed GG with KCS - a condition where the eyes don’t produce enough tears and cause a lot of problems. Using an eye ointment we were able to improve her right eye, but at the point she was at, the left could not be saved and had to be removed. We also discovered that GG had allergies causing her to chew herself raw but on a limited ingredient diet and medication, they are manageable. Finally comfortable in her own skin (literally,) GG was able to decompress in her cozy foster home and heal. Her fur has grown back and she has found her own forever family who loves her and gives her the life she’s always deserved.

In the end, GG was lucky that she was found and taken to the county shelter who reached out to us. And we were lucky we were able to say yes to her! Dogs that looked like GG did simply don’t get adopted from shelters and most shelters can’t provide the type of extensive medical care that GG needed - but that’s why we exist!

Every donation during Give!Guide allows us to continue to say yes to pups like GG in 2026. Check out Give!Guide to donate here: https://giveguide.org/nonprofits/stumptown-strays
Or share this post with your networks to spread the word about our work. We truly couldn’t do it without your support. 💙🐾

"AUGUSTUS" CUTIE!! little SHAGGY mix (listed as POODLE mix) "STUMPTOWN STRAYS"

Stumptown Strays" is a wonderful local Rescue that helps shelter dogs in need of medical assistance.

"AUGUSTUS plus VIDEO " is Available for adoption with STUMPTOWN STRAYS

AUGUSTUS

neutered male 3 yrs 13 lbs Poodle mix

adoption fee $350  ok with kids, dogs, (cats unknown)

adoption application

Personality: Affectionate, Friendly, Gentle, Loves, Playful, Quiet

Augustus, our 3 year old 13 pound poodley mix, has convinced himself that balls are the best toys on the planet. He also seems to think they are extremely rare. Not the kind of guy to squander a good thing, if Augustus finds a ball, he will squirrel it away in a special hiding place. He has a hard time imagining that in his forever home the toys will be as plentiful as the belly scratches.

Augustus was found stray and the shelter reached out to us for help. He had a condition called "cherry-eye". This means the tear gland in both of his eyes had prolapsed; without surgery, he would have chronic dry-eye, irritation and pain. We took Augustus in to fix this condition (and got rid of his testicles while we were at it). He just passed his recheck with flying colors.

Augustus loves people and is quite friendly, especially once he gets to know someone. Augustus spends much of his day happily flopping near people to see if a belly rub is forthcoming. It's easy to give in to his demands as Augustus is outrageously soft and sweet. Augustus likes dogs and is playful with them, but we have not seen him with cats. We can do an introduction if needed.

Potty trained and quiet, Augustus has been a great guest. Augustus has come a long way on his crate training too. He doesn't want to be apart from his person for long, so Augustus does better if crated in a room with another dog friend. He would prefer an adopter who is home often. Augustus loves walks and adventures. He needs some help with leash training as he pulls and barks at things that excite him, but Augustus is smart and wants to please.

Augustus is heartworm negative and is current on his flea and heartworm preventatives.

Think you can provide enough balls and belly rubs to keep Augustus happy?

"SCARLETT" MED-sz Belgian Shepherd/Malinois mix "STUMPTOWN STRAYS"

Stumptown Strays" is a wonderful local Rescue that helps shelter dogs in need of medical assistance.

"SCARLETT plus VIDEO " is Available for adoption with STUMPTOWN STRAYS

SCARLETT

spayed female 10 mths 45 lbs

adoption fee $300  ok with older kids, dogs yes , (cats maybe)

adoption application

Personality: Affectionate, Athletic, Curious, Friendly, Loves, Playful, Protective

Scarlett, our 10 month old 45 pound Belgian Malinois mix, is so happy to be done with her inflatable collar. Sure, Scarlett looked great in a cone and she really pulled off leg bandages (very "80's aerobics class"), but she feels best when you can see her whole beautiful self.

Found stray, we suspect Scarlett must have been attacked by other animals. She had multiple deep wounds on her front legs and was combating infections. The shelter needed our help and Scarlett needed somewhere to heal. We've been through about 10000 bandage changes together and Scarlett has been a perfect patient throughout. Scarlett would just stand there sweetly, licking some peanut butter, while we flushed her wounds and put on new dressings. FINALLY healed, we're so excited to find this lovely dog a forever home.

Like most sheppy puppies, Scarlett is smart and food motivated. She is playful and active and has even joined her foster family on several runs. Scarlett is eager to learn how to be a good dog. She is mostly leash trained, but is very tempted by squirrels. Scarlett is potty trained and good in her crate (although she would admittedly prefer to be where the action is). She is very friendly but can be wary of new people coming into her home. Once proven they aren't murders, Scarlett is happy to shower them with kisses.

Scarlett would do great in a home with another playful dog or one with access to other dogs that want to play. Although we have not seen her with cats, Scarlett wants to chase them outside, so a slow introduction would be recommended. Scarlett likely would be fine with older kids; she's still learning not to jump up, so small kids are not recommended.

Scarlett is heartworm negative and current on her flea and heartworm preventatives.

Have you been searching for a running/hiking/adventure buddy? Scarlett has been searching too! Maybe you should meet....

"SHADOW" can you HELP? SHADOW - WEIMARANER "Oregon Weimaraner Rescue"

Oregon Weimaraner Rescue is a small registered non-profit, all Volunteer rescue group devoted to helping Weimaraners, Weim mixes and other pointer types in the Northwest.

This boy Shadow with OWR is a really nice dog with medical needs.  If you would like to help him, and help the rescue to cover his costs,  anything would be appreciated!  Any  donations you make will go directly to his care.

Oregon Weimaraner Rescue  FB  Post Nov 26, 2025

"Shadow Update! It’s been a long few months for Shadow with heartworm treatment and a surprise (unrelated) ER visit. But we’re getting close to the end of the treatment and he has been the best boy through it all!
He’s not looking happy in the pictures because he is at the vet getting the LAST TWO heartworm injections and he had to stay at the vet for 24 hours.☹️ And, just two weeks ago he had an ER visit with an overnight stay when he suddenly got sick with prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate) and a urinary tract infection. He was in a lot of pain!
Thankfully, he responded to medications and was able to stay on schedule for the heartworm treatment. Next up, neuter and (minor) tumor removal surgery and that is it!!
If you’ve been thinking while reading this … hmmm what would all that cost? About $6,000! 😳
Alas, we are asking for donations if you are able. Any amount is appreciated!
To donate:

Or send a check to Oregon Weimaraner Rescue, PO Box 86497, Portland, OR 97286
As soon as Shadow is given the all clear for heartworm disease and he’s been neutered he will be ready for his forever home (if his foster parents can let him go, they are quite the family now). We will keep you posted.
We appreciate your support! 🐾❤️🐾"

UPDATE IN Foster HOme

 LUCKY # 172963

spayed female, 9 yrs 1 mth PUG /Boston Terrier  $25

Adopt me on the 4th of this month and my fee is waived! It's the Craig Stein Yappy Hour and we're honoring our friend Craig by waiving adoption fees for all pets. And every pet adopted during the promotion will also receive a branded bandana and a starter kit with food, treats, and toys!

Here's what you need to know about me:

I'd like a home where my family is home often. I'm just really social and love spending time with people, I prefer to not be left alone for long periods.

I have some handling sensitivity. That means I have some preferences about how and where I get petted. My human friends at the shelter can tell you more!

It's recommended I meet any dogs or kids living in my new home before I'm adopted. I just want to make sure we all get along.

PERMANENT FOSTER dogs currently with OLD DOG HAVEN

Happy Final Refuge Friday!
Friends, WE NEED MORE FOREVER FOSTERS!!
This is going to be a long post but we sure hope you'll read it and share it
Final Refuge is another way of saying "forever foster" or permanent foster home.

Old Dog Haven's mission is to take senior dogs who have been deemed "unadoptable" and give them permanent homes. When we are asked for help we pull senior dogs from our local shelters. Shelter seniors are a priority for us, but we also take senior dogs directly from owners when we gather information that leads us to determine we cannot or should not courtesy post them for their owners. Most rescues are not able to provide permanent homes for the senior dogs they take in once they find that those dogs are not going to be adopted. When we are asked and can find a home for those dogs, we bring them into our care as well.
Some ask why they can't just adopt a dog we post as needing an Old Dog Haven home. If a shelter has determined it will not be making a dog available for adoption, that is their call to make and we respect that. The reasons these dogs are not made available for adoption can be advanced age, complicated medical issues, or they are an emotionally fragile old dog that should not be put through adoption (risking another rehoming).
Often we are asked why we cannot extend our reach beyond parts of W. Washington and Portland, OR. Friends, let us tell you that we would LOVE to extend our reach! However, that would not be responsible rescue. We hover at about 300 dogs in permanent care. To give those dogs the best we can, we know we can't send them to homes we have not carefully screened. We work with many vet clinics, specialists and specialty clinics. This doesn't mean we have "deals" with
these businesses. Yes, some may offer us a rescue discount that we greatly appreciate. However, the bottom line is we want to work with the veterinary clinics we know have the knowledge and equipment our seniors need. You see the dogs we take into our care- so many need a lot of care. Many of our dogs have emergencies when the vet they regularly see is closed or in the middle of the night. We need to be sure that wherever each dog lands, there is an E.R. hospital close by.
We match dogs we take into our care with fosters whose lifestyles match the dog's needs. Most seniors need more potty breaks, they don't manage long hours alone, they need to see a vet more often than younger dogs do. We understand that means there are those who won't be able to foster for us and we know sometimes it causes hard feelings. That is unfortunate but we hope that everyone can understand we do not want to "fail" these dogs. Please remember that most of the dogs we take into our care have already endured so much loss. We want to give every single one of these old dogs the very best homes we can offer them. We believe so many of you feel the same way-you love old dogs and you want to help them!
Today we are sharing Sancho again as he is still in need of your shares.
A shelter foster brought him home from the shelter but that is not a permanent placement. We would like to find a forever foster home for Sancho. He certainly received a lot of attention from his initial post but that didn't equate to finding him a home! We hope you'll join us again in sharing this unique little fellow.
