Meet Opal!

Opal weighs only 45 pounds, is about 1 year old, spayed, microchipped and current on her vaccines. She is adorably small, smart and loves to cuddle!

Opal was found as a stray with another dog who is now living a pampered life in his forever home. Opal was adopted and has been living in a home with three other dogs for a couple months. We are looking for a new home so Opal can live her best life; we’ve learned from her that a home with no dogs or just one, calm, submissive male dog is what she’d like. Ultimately, people are Opal’s favorite living creatures. She likes playing with other dogs but in the home she is all about her humans.

IF Opal is to live with another dog, her dream dog is an easy going, submissive male close to, or bigger than she. Small dogs are not a match; she does not get along with the small, outwardly alpha dog in the home. It seems Ms. Opal is in search of the Alpha Dog Crown to wear proudly (we believe she had a litter of puppies and that being a Mama Dog is where this idea comes from). And, since Opal can be high energy and likes to wrestle, the dog would have to be okay with a high level of play.

Opal would be content to live without a dog companion so long as her people engage in playtime and are home a lot. Opal understands she cannot have the Alpha Human Crown and does really well following leadership - she gets it.  As far as kids go, she has met several in public and seemed comfortable. We are hopeful her home will be fairly quiet and not chaotic, so older kiddos with some dog experience might be a match.

Opal does not require a lot of exercise - a good daily leash walk will do.  But she does need to be engaged, so activities such as throwing her Jolly Ball (her favorite toy), teaching her agility, or hiding treats and playing “Go Find” are important.  She loves chasing squirrels so if you happen to have some that like to tease dogs, she will be entertained! Cats are not compatible; No history, has a prey drive, too risky.

Opal is house trained, knows many basic commands, is good on leash, crate trained (not her favorite but she gets through it), is okay having her feet, mouth, and ears touched, lets you put your hand in her food bowl and take her toys from her mouth, and she is calm in the house (until you instigate play!).  When a stranger comes to the door she does not bark, she follows her person to the door to greet her new friend. She would invite them in for snuggles on the couch if she could.

She is not perfect, when greeting people she’ll sometimes jump up and put her front paws on them to say Hi. She also chews through basic toys and hates getting bathed inside or out (she is terribly afraid of the hose even with warm water - see picture where she's hiding from the hose). But after all her activities and chewing on toys, she is a couch potato at night. She is completely asleep at 8 p.m. on the dot every night.
