came in with Bonita (the tan dog)
Project POOCH, quite simply, changes lives. We operate a kennel inside a youth correctional facility and pair currently incarcerated youth with shelter dogs. The youth learn kennel management, positive reinforcement, grooming, and training techniques. The youth learn what it means to be depended on by another living creature and what it means to be trusted and relied upon. And, they learn what unconditional love feels like—sometimes for the first time. Our dogs get trained, loved, and adopted into their forever homes. There is no limit to the amount of time a dog spends in our care, and we are focused on the individual needs of each dog."

MARIPOSA spayed female, Chihuahua/terrier mix, Appx 2 yrs, 9 lbs
Hi! If you give me just a minute to get used to new friends, I’d be happy to meet your acquaintance. While I start off a little shy, my confident friends give me confidence. Once I know you, I am happy to cuddle, or go on a little adventure, or just be near you. I like hanging with other dogs I know and having them show me what is safe, but I can learn that from my people friends too.
Mariposa is about 2 years old, a terrier mix, and 9 lbs. She is a boisterous, exuberant, little girl, and has really enjoyed making new friends, human and dog, here at pooch. She plays in that adorable small dog style, with bouncy butt swings and darting away. Her ideal play partner is around her size, but she can warm up to a gentler large dog – it just takes more time. Mariposa came from the shelter with a friend, Bonita. While they are not bonded, they could certainly share a home.
While at POOCH, Mariposa has worked hard coming out of her shell, and is learning more about the world in leaps and bounds. She is eager to learn with food, and is working on the basics, plus some tricks. Mariposa is particularly interested in figuring out her enrichment! She loves helping you recycle by shredding empty toilet paper rolls filled with treats.
She’s loved going out on walks, and has a blast exploring the campus. The training has really helped her build her confidence and expand her world. Mariposa really enjoys the youth and spending time with them getting cuddles. She greets her people enthusiastically, with paws in the air. She can be a bit vocal when someone new comes into her space, but we are working on her greetings.
(Interested in the little brown dog pictured with her as well? That’s Bonita, her best friend!)
