Project POOCH, quite simply, changes lives. We operate a kennel inside a youth correctional facility and pair currently incarcerated youth with shelter dogs. The youth learn kennel management, positive reinforcement, grooming, and training techniques. The youth learn what it means to be depended on by another living creature and what it means to be trusted and relied upon. And, they learn what unconditional love feels like—sometimes for the first time. Our dogs get trained, loved, and adopted into their forever homes. There is no limit to the amount of time a dog spends in our care, and we are focused on the individual needs of each dog."

AUSTIN neutered male, Breed: DOODLE APPROX 1.5 yr 40 lbs
Gets along well with many other dogs (meet & greet is required)
Learning how to love on people
If you have another dog, I bet we would be best friends! I love my dog friends and would love a big brother or sister to show me around the world.
When Austin knows you, he is sweet, playful, and eager to be at your side. However, he needs time to build a relationship and get to know you. He can be sensitive about new situations but is realizing that he doesn’t have to be scared of novel experiences.
Austin enjoys being around his dog friends and can adapt his place style to his friends’ needs. He is most confident with his dog friends, and we believe he would do best in a home with another dog.
Right now, Austin is working on his leash skills with the youth and enjoys long walks on campus with staff. He is still a bit anxious, so we work on pattern games to help him regulate his anxiety and counter-condition his nerves around people and new situations.
If you’re looking for a dog who makes you feel chosen when he loves up on you, Austin might be that special one. He just wants someone to take the time to make him feel comfortable, safe, and secure.
Austin’s ideal home would have another dog to help him build confidence and a patient family who understands he will need their help to navigate the world. Austin has had a home visit in the past, and we learned that in that environment he shows some reactivity to strangers and other dogs. POOCH will provide up to three training sessions with our lead trainer to help Austin learn the ropes and settle into a new home.
Youth Insight:
Can be really shy with people but LOVES other dogs
VERY food motivated
Austin has anxiety and will need an adopter who is willing to go SLOW with him
Austin will need time to settle into his new environment and build confidence
Austin would do better in a home with another dog; he gets his confidence from his dog friends
Austin does not do well with loud, unpredictable noises and unpredictable movement. He would likely do best in a home with no children, or with older children who will respect his space and can read and respond to his body language.
