Dogs- yes Cats-yes, Kids-yes
Ellie, our 4 month old 7 pound Chihuahua-Pug mix, loves everyone. We aren’t sure what the opposite of “stranger danger” is, but that’s what Ellie has. All people, kids included, are potential friends according to Ellie. She feels the same way about dogs (big and small), cats, even ducklings. Our little social butterfly is ready to finish growing up in her own home.
Ellie came to us from the shelter after she was discovered to have a heart murmur. We had her evaluated by a cardiologist and diagnosed her with a congenital condition called Atrial Septal Defect. This means Ellie was born with a hole in the inner wall of her heart. This hole causes some of the blood to flow backwards, making the heart work harder and become enlarged. Atrial Septal Defects are not readily repaired and instead are medically managed.
Ellie is on a medication to help decrease the pressure in her lungs secondary to her heart condition. This medication costs about 30 dollars a month. Ellie does occasionally cough, but this has improved since we started her treatment. At this point, Ellie has no restrictions on what she can do. What we don’t know is if her defect will ever lead to worsening disease. It is not common for Atrial Septal Defects to cause heart failure, but it’s possible. Ellie’s adopter will need to visit a cardiologist every 6-12 months to make sure medication changes aren’t needed. Some dogs with this defect live a normal life span. Others, sadly, do not. Ellie vows to continue to make every day count.
Ellie is otherwise a typical puppy. She is playful, funny, and a fan of toys. Ellie is crate trained and is working on being potty trained (almost there!). Food motivated and smart, Ellie is a quick study. Her adoption fee is $200.
We know taking on a puppy with a congenital condition is a big ask. We also know that Ellie will make the right family really happy. Is it yours? Apply to adopt on our website! https://www.stumptownstrays.org/adoption-application
*NOTE: a cardiologist visit can run about $700-900 a visit (FB comment Stumptown Strays)
