"Project POOCH, quite simply, changes lives. We operate a kennel inside a youth correctional facility and pair currently incarcerated youth with shelter dogs. The youth learn kennel management, positive reinforcement, grooming, and training techniques. The youth learn what it means to be depended on by another living creature and what it means to be trusted and relied upon. And, they learn what unconditional love feels like—sometimes for the first time. Our dogs get trained, loved, and adopted into their forever homes. There is no limit to the amount of time a dog spends in our care, and we are focused on the individual needs of each dog."
"MALIK" AVAILABLE FOR Adoption at "PROJECT POOCH"
MALIK neutered male German Shep, Cattle Dog, Malinois mix, 3 yrs 60 lbs
Greetings! My name is Malik (Ma-leek) and I’m an appx. 3-year-old German Shepherd, Australian Cattle Dog, and Belgian Malinois Mix. My friends at POOCH call me a melty shepherd as I just love people so much I melt right into them. I love stuffed toys, snacks, and people!
A shepherd lover’s shepherd: Malik loves his people and feels best when he is with them. He carries his soft toy with him when following his people around. He prefers to be in the same space as you but is working on settling when you’re out of sight.
Affectionately referred to as “melty,’” Malik will turn into mush when you pet him. He leans into your touch and gathers confidence from his people. The youth have been working with him on a variety of skills to help him in the next chapter of life. Malik came to us a bit of an overzealous greeter, jumping up to be able to greet you at face level, but he's learned that he gets more love when those feet stay on the ground. As an eager young dog, Malik could be a bit of a puller to explore the world, so we have worked on his leash manners (including getting the prancy heel that shepherds excel at). Malik can be opinionated toward other dogs on walks but can redirect to his handler and focus past his triggers (other dogs mostly).
He enjoys working with his people and loves cheese. His favorite toys are big, soft toys that he can carry around with him and show off. He plays fetch with them and brings them to you in order to continue the game. Like many of the POOCH dogs before him, he is having a blast learning how to play with the flirt pole as well!
Malik's ideal adopter is someone who is looking for a new partner. He would love a home where he can continue to learn and build a solid relationship with his family. He can be a little nervous about things sometimes, so his new home would need to understand that he only looks tough and is a bit of a big baby in need of comfort.
